Lesson 8 of 10 · 5 min

Collect deposits through a payment link

Send guests a card deposit link and have the deposit status update itself.

What you'll learn

  • Connect a payment gateway
  • Send a deposit link in a template
  • Know the limits of card deposit holds

Set it up

  1. Under Payment providers on the dashboard, select Connect for Stripe.
  2. Sign up for a new Stripe account or connect your existing one.
  3. Go to the Templates page and insert the Deposit Link parameter into a message.
  4. Make sure that template is in the building's messaging flow.

When the template sends, the guest receives a deposit link. Once they pay, the deposit status changes from "Deposit pending" to "Deposit paid" automatically.

Things to know

  • Cards only. Guests can pay by debit or credit card.
  • It's a hold, not a charge. The deposit is held on the guest's card and released automatically after checkout. You can also refund it earlier yourself.
  • Holds expire. A card hold can last up to 30 days where the guest's card supports extended holds, but for many cards it's about 7 days. For long stays, collect the deposit another way, such as a bank transfer.
  • Refunds take time to reach the guest. The money leaves straight away, but the guest's bank decides how quickly it shows up. As a guide: local credit cards take from instantly to 7 working days, and foreign credit cards 7–14 working days. Debit cards can take longer, sometimes beyond 21 working days.
